My Father's Glory & My Mother's Castle (1990)
This universally loved two-part French film about the boyhood of playwright Marcel Pagnol will make you wish for more honest times. Bonus links included.
Le Gloire de mon père (My Father’s Glory) and Le Chåteau de ma mère (My Mother’s Castle). In French with English subtitles.
There are several interesting video links below that you may like. (1) The real Marcel being interviewed as a grown man, (2) a live presentation in 2023 of one of the original, beautiful musical pieces from the films, and (3) a French family RV-traveling through southern France to find and visit the original filming locations.
Interesting links:
This is Marcel, the boy from the film, grown up and interviewed (on the subject of the Latin language), on April 30, 1958. Even if you don’t speak French, it can be interesting to watch for a minute or two just to get an idea of what the boy became in his older age.
Beautiful music from the film, called Augustine’s Waltz, played live in concert in 2023:

Again, French is not absolutely necessary to enjoy this, but passable subtitles might be available through YouTube.
The films, My Father’s Glory and My Mother’s Castle, were based on two small books of the same names by Marcel Pagnol. Here’s a nice review of the books by Kate Howe at YouTube. (Of course, there are spoilers.)
